when to dance solo

Unless you got moves like this guy, please keep your solos short.

One of our students asked me a very interesting question, “during a dance, when should I go solo?”

We all know that by nature, Casino is a couple’s dance. But we all know as well that Cuban Salsa has an improvisation switch that never turns off. Turn off that switch and you turn off the power.

So from time-to-time we separate from our partner to express our nature and improvise our hearts out.

When should you dance solo?

Whenever the spirit moves you of course! But if you are having a hard time getting in touch with your inner-dancer, here are some ideas:

1. When a musician goes into a solo, try following suit. Timbales anyone?!?

2. Ease your follow into it. A TRUE follow is in a completely submissive mind-state. Having your partner instantly jump away and break into some lame routine can be jarring!

3. Keep it short and sweet, especially with beginner dancers who have little to zero solo movement ability.

4. Try to blur the line between couple and solo movements. You can maintain cohesion and unity without compromising expression if you give your follow lots of time to shine during patterns and couple movement.
