effortless effort
The wrong effort will never be fruitful.
We were always taught that our best work comes when we try hardest. But sometimes, a lot of the times even, our best work comes when we try our least hardest.
Trying to execute turn patterns. Trying to adjust to her lead. Trying to stay on beat.
How many times have I caught people doing the right things when they were NOT trying? I could fill a book with examples.
But let’s be clear here. “Effortless effort” really means the right kind of effort. The kind that is not concerned with outcomes and achievement.
If you are overly concerned with achievement you will be fine until the moment you do not achieve, then you’ll feel bad and try to use more effort which, if not successful will bring you closer to quitting.
You are already a fantastic dancer, you simply lack training. So what are you trying to achieve?
We cannot give you anything that was not already yours. You are you.
The moment you can accept that your training is only a mere formality, a direction toward something that is already yours, you will stop quitting, stop becoming frustrated and enjoy your time in class and on the dance floor.
p.s. You will achieve.
